   Division 3 No. 10-ranked Pontiac Notre Dame Preparatory eliminated No. 8-ranked Detroit Country Day 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday, Oct. 20, to win the Michigan High School Athletic Association District 40 boys soccer championship at Clawson.

   It was Notre Dame’s first boys soccer district championship since 2017.

   The closely-fought game was scoreless at halftime.

   Notre Dame senior Jeronimo Ballesty headed a corner kick from junior Jacob Lanham 6:30 into the second half to give the Irish a 1-0 lead.

   Country Day was able to tie the game with 14 minutes left in the game on a goal from junior Ben Farah to force overtime.

   Junior Jacob Lanham scored the game-winning goal 2:38 into in the first half of overtime. The Irish defense then held off the Yellowjackets for the remainder of the two 10-minute halves of overtime.

   “I have no words to describe that,” Lanham told reporters. “I don’t score too many goals, and it’s an amazing feeling. I didn’t even see it hit the back of the net, and it’s ‘holy cow’ and an amazing feeling.”

   Notre Dame beat Clawson 2-1 in overtime in its district semifinal on Monday, Oct. 18. Country Day beat Macomb Lutheran North 2-0 in its district semifinal on Monday, Oct. 18.

   Country Day finishes its season at 11-7-2.

   Notre Dame advances to the Region 10 playoffs hosted by Country Day on Tuesday, Oct. 26, where the Irish (11-6-5) will face Michigan Center (11-1-3).

   Michigan Center beat Onsted 1-0 to win its district championship.

   No. 2-ranked Grosse Ile also will compete in the regional and will face the winner of District 38 where Ida faces Ann Arbor Father Gabriel Richard for the title today, Oct. 21. Grosse Ile beat Dearborn Henry Ford 5-1 to earn the District 39 championship on Wednesday.
