Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett players and coaches pose with their MHSAA district championship trophy on Thursday.

   Division 4 No. 3-ranked Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett eliminated Hamtramck Oakland International Academy 3-1 to earn the Michigan High School Athletic Association District 56 boys soccer championship on Thursday, Oct. 21, at Liggett.

   Senior Jake Carron, sophomore Claudio Cavallo, and senior Dougie Wood scored for the Knights (18-2-0).

   Liggett beat Hope of Detroit Academy 7-0 in the district semifinal on Tuesday, Oct. 19. Oakland International topped Detroit Cristo Rey 3-1 in its semifinal.

 

   Liggett won the Catholic High School League Cardinal Division championship over Royal Oak Shrine 2-1 on Oct. 6.

   Liggett advances to the MHSAA Region 14 tournament at Riverview Gabriel Richard. Liggett will face District 53 winner No. 9-ranked Hillsdale Academy on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Hillsdale Academy beat No. 14 Grass Lake in its district final on Thursday, Oct. 21.

   On the other side of the regional District 54 winner Ann Arbor Greenhills will face the District 55 winner on Tuesday, Oct. 26. Monroe St. Mary Catholic plays Allen Park Inter-City Baptist for that title on Friday, Oct. 22.  Greenhills beat Manchester 2-1 on Thursday, Oct. 21, for its district championship.
